Seal
Removeable side plates on a bearing that are usually made of rubber or some other flexible material. Seals provide protection against contamination and loss of lubrication material, but seals can be removed to allow the bearings to be cleaned. (A bearing will either have non-removeable shields on the sides, or removeable seals.)

Seals consisting of synthetic rubber moulded to a steel plate are incorporated into the outer rings of these ball bearings. There are two types of sealed bearings. One uses contact seals and the other non-contact seals. Contact seals provide excellent dust penetration but have a start up torque penalty, hence the send option of non-contact seals which are designed for low torque applications.

Shield
Non-removeable steel plates that cover the sides of a bearing, and protect it from contamination and loss of lubrication material. ZZ bearings have sheilds on both sides and Z bearings have shields on one side only. a bearing will either have non-removeable shields on the sides, or removeable seals.

Bearing and Housing Seals

Sealed Bearing
These have rubbing seals that seal against recesses in the inner ring shoulder. This limits the speed to around 70% of the corresponding unsealed bearing. Sealed bearings are lubricated for life and hence under extreme conditions life can be short. However they are becoming increasingly popular for smaller deep groove ball bearings operating under light loads and moderate speeds.

Shielded Bearing
Shields are non rubbing seals. Shielded bearings are lubricated for life and hence under extreme conditions life can be short. However they are becoming increasingly popular for smaller deep groove ball bearings operating under light loads and moderate speeds.
